EYE SHINE

Posted: June 30, 2011 in Uncategorized

This is one of my favorite things that one can experience while out at night ‘squatchin’! Its EYE SHINE ! Now for the longest time I never saw this phenomena until up in mendo at my favorite placeI call “Squatch Rock”.

IT happened one night as I went out 2 am to take a leak… I had been playing hide and seek with squatch earlier that day and was hearing them a lot in the evening and had gone to sleep woke up and went out and was standing there looking out over an area about 3 achers: gardens, open grass, live stock,  sweat lodge,  spring, all this is in the clearing surrounded by woods

this is up on the ridge over-looking Ukiah and you can see the twinkling lights of that city way off in the distance…as my eyes came into focus my thoughts were

” I don’t remember lights over there isn’t that usually really dark woods?” ..Still with the clouds sort of muting the moon…I looked really hard and by the time I had finished I realized they were in sets of two! Spread sort of randomly about the area and then they came into focus…! It was six different squatch all mulling around sort of posing this way and that like ‘strike a pose!’ As the reality set in I became incredibly shy! Like I had just pee’d in front of  you and you friends and also realizing this was who I had been running this way and that tree crash here rock knock there me running fast as I could around in circles chasing  after the sounds and trying to see them…they had amber eyes sort of flashlight color with a tinge of yellowy orange…I responded like I was Puck in a ‘Mid Summers Night Dream’ with an old english accent & everything like I was on stage…that’s how it felt! I monologue for I dunno… 1 minute of “who knows what I recited”  and then took a deep bow and turned and exited back into the tent…sort of shaken mostly exhilerated…Eyes were not reflecting light they were Emanating light from within!

Now that was the first time i saw this and since I see it a lot and have come to understand that this is a way of communication. they can emanate the full spectrum of colors and each color has a different meaning and mood. The amber light is caution like “ok  all other squatch..there’s a human but it’s not a threat and beware” the Red eyes is definitely threatened & threatening. When they’re just relaxed it’s usually green-blue or aqua blue or turquoise sort of colors. When they communicate the eyes flash like moris codes flickering from both eyes independently as each one holds its own info in the communication. So two or more “talking”  looks like both eyes flickering at different speeds, and light intensities and hues, all the while flicking back and forth from one squatch to the other walking along, or just hanging out  ‘speaking’ silently with this ‘eye shine’ . They emanate silver and golden but mostly it’s in the aqua/pale blue/turquoise green to each other. I know the Indian legends speak of them always coming at night “with a lantern’ and if you are out in their areas early in the am you eventually see what I talking about, it took me up until 4 years ago but since then, LOTS of eye shine.

They also use it to camouflage themselves. If  WE see lights in the dark forest, we’re most likely to dissmiss it as a star in the distance or something ‘human’ and not give it a second thought… they count on this from us.. along with not knowing which animal makes what sound and when they use the combo to thwart unwanted curiosity from humans by imitating everything in the environment ! Like mechanical sounds, lights that go with bikes or head lamps, I even have seen them imitate what was supposed to be boats on the water!! So the next time you hear a ‘mountain quail’ in the valleys or coast of Califonia>>> Or California quail in Oklahoma, or a sound or sounds that you know  “no bird round here makes”, or  the sound seems to be ” just too big for a woodpecker” or you see lights doing funny things, like appearing then you look , again same spot later,  no lights there…guess what : you’ve been psyched by a squatch!

I have many stories from my own archives of experiences regarding eye shine so I’ll be posting more on these subjects of ‘communications & camouflage’ used by squatch so..stay tune to treepeekers happy squatchin…

now here’s where the science comes in…From Bob T my BF Bud from the FBFB movie adventure> I asked him to back me up here with HIS findings and his article about this same subject! Thanks to Bob and this is the first ‘installment’ enjoy the SCIENCE …Oh Yee Of Little Faith…LOL

“Man has trichromat or daytime eyes and common animals like dogs, cats and deer have dichromatic or night time eyes. The dichromatic eye has a part called a Tapetum Lucidum, and it’s the membrane that lines the back of the lens in the eyes. This reflective structure acts like a mirror and reflects light back through the retina, giving the retina two chances to catch the light. Most animals that are active at night have Tapetums to improve their night vision.

In order to see this kind of eye shine you need a bright external light source like a flashlight or the headlights on a car. I am sure most people have seen the glowing eyes of various animals on the shoulder of a road. The Tapetum glows and shines back at source of the light because of the duel sampling of the available light.

Everything about the dichromatic eyes seems to fit what’s being reported. Approximately 20% of Bigfoot reports include eye shine and Bigfoot seems to be more active at night. To the laymen or closed minded researcher the tapetum theory is enough to explain eye shine…But!  Sasquatch is believed to be a primate. The vast majority of primates (with the exception of a monkey and a few marsupials)  have achieved trichomacy and subsequently don’t have a tapetum lucidum…So what is shining?

We can do a simple experiment: A man and his dog go in to the forest at night. You take a flashlight and shine it at the man and dog. The only eye shine you get is from the dog. The man’s eyes don’t shine back. Man is a primate and his eyes don’t have a tapetum.

OK…If Sasquatch is a primate and has achieved trichromacy – Their eyes shouldn’t shine or glow at all. However… many reports include this eye shine and there are even daytime reports that include red eye shine.

The behavior being reported is inconsistent with both types of eyes however attributes from both types of eyes seem to be present.

Conclusion: There is a third kind of eye.

I will post an article I wrote about eye shine research titled:

Eye Shine – Documented in Man.

My article is based on a paper I found written in a scientific journal and my personal experiences. Human Eye Shine was documented around 1930!!”

I would have to totally disagree with your therory on this subject as I have experienced eye shine myself and saw the thing they came from what you are proposing is they are capable of bioluminesence from their eyes. Now to say they are mood changing colors and they communicate with morse code is a bit no way out far fetched. These are a nocturnal animal and are extreamly elusive and shy. Yes they are curious but most remain extreamly shy and cautious. As they are primarly nocturnal they have adapted to seeing well at night in virtully total dakness they see as well or better at night as we can during a full moon. Etc etc they light you claim to see is a refracted light from an other light source off of the back of its inner eye these collect light and refract the light back upon the cornia as it does with all living mammals. It would appear to some as they emmit or make lite but that is not the case as in doing so emmiting a light from an eye would esentialy make that eye useless and blind there is no eye on earth that is capable of such a feat. Like some fish may have a bioluminesent part or parts on their bodies to attracked pray or produce light that their large eyes may capture to turn into a sight picture. Sas does not emmit aor make light from its eyes . It simply is tbe design of the eye that refracts and reflects light as well as different power and types of light will make it appear as they eye is changeing color. If you would like to discuss this further I am inclined to discuss this but this is your therory backed by no evidenc,e or fact the explination I have offered you is by far more naturally and sciantifically based. Thanks

I thank you for your input..Sounds like you have ‘Science’ to back you up! Congrats for regurgitation of the same ol’ info… this is naturally beyond what the ‘acceptable standards’ of society and current state of “beliefs” will have or say. Most of what I will be writing about will.
You don’t have to believe me please go out in the woods at 2 am til dawn for a few years then we’ll be on the same page until then…. you can say what you want …and I will be fair enough to listen. I know what I know from tens of thousands of hours out there by myself AT NIGHT! I’m really aware that I may occur as out there….I’m ok with that. Read my Courageous Conversations piece. That Might clear things up … thanks for the chance to clairify my position. I Do have some science acctually to support me and will be asking it’s author for permission to post it here for you & my readers. ASAP!

I dont doubt….but two things….1. Maybe you need someone out there to see what you see and possibly with a hidden video cam? 2. I have been out in the woods, here in Ok, as well as Idaho, Washington, Oregon and few other place in the world and have seen eye shine from a human.

    • treepeekers says:

Brian, thanks for you input and I have had all my accounts backed up especially eye shine…the ‘Event’ was especially revealing and was witnessed by a woman who had no context just ‘WOW’ My son who also is new to this stuff. I make it a point to bring folks along cuz I’m aware that one person in the field doesn’t equal credibility…they saw what I saw…mind you Eye shine was a phenomena that only in the last 5 years became common in my experience including in the day light!

  6. Dan Elliott says:

I Believe the abilities of the Sasquatch,,eye as you stated about the Tapetum Lucindum ,,I also thinkThere are, modifications to their eyes that would be present,, for them to run through the ,,Forest as they do and not hurt or damage the eye,, a small problem, could cause big
    Problems for the Sas.

  7. Bob says:

One advantage to having a coned head would be that you could move through dense forested areas easier. Tipping the head down, leading with their hips (in line steps) and back-handing bushes, branches….ect, would protect the face and eyes from being the main penetrator.

    • Dan Elliott says:

I Believe many species ,in the amphibious, arena have retractable ,,covers for the eye, It goes to a man in California, that, in his statement as to the eye’s of a Bigfoot, He said that the eyelashes,,
were extra long, He seen it from a short distance 6 ft. to quote it had to lean the head back to
be able to see ,as the lashes were not raised , A nocturnal animal , that is in the cover under
the canopy, would have use for alens cover to fold down, that would operate as safety glasses
and the lashes to control the amount of light that is needed, this would also be a good way ,,
the retractable lens cover, to use when diving for muscles,or fishing ,,the crocodilian, group
uses this design and is time tested and necessary.

Human eye-shine is seen in this video and during the day, no less!!! It also happens to be a news report on BF!!!

Watch exactly at the 5:19 marker…

    Pretty cool!

    • treepeekers says:

i didn’t see it seems like that flash was from his glasses in this but thanks for posting some youtube here i was sort of staying away from from ‘other video’ media but since it’s a california news cast it’s ok i guess

      • JP says:

        I don’t see him wearing glasses…maybe I need some! 😀

        JP

      • treepeekers says:

yeah apparently so! Those are glasses on that guy for sure and I see the flash HE is wareing glasses!! for sure mate! Look closer and look at the next shot of that guy and the next He’ss wareing glasses meant to blend in with his natural skin color and face shape.

    • treepeekers says:

Actually I like the Billy Evans ‘sasquatch all around’ which is next to this one in the corner after it plays … that little flash is not eyeshine but reflected off his glasses from the camera’s big light that’s on even in bright sun for tv. I was trying to be different by NOT putting youtube video’s up here cz that’s so well done by FBFB and I have my own video which when I have enough of a written material base I will be crossing over to video blogging daily finds and my techs in real time… for now I’m gonna keep writing and probably when the leaves drop and I can walk in to their camps because the natural barriers will be down I’ll be posting my findings as I make my rounds through my known areas right here… til then then next two months I’ll be just writing so It will make more sense to newbies and context my research as I am THE ‘Urban’ ‘Suburban’ ‘backyard and graveyard’ ‘green belt open space’ or creeks in the ‘middle of town’ is where I found big foot guy! all the other folks out there go look for them in the middle of the deep dark woods they are there too but they seem to like me so I don’t chase or hunt they chase & hunt me! Seems like it anyway… I’m gonna keep it simple … I have a lot more to share that video is just a distraction from. when I get this FLIR working right that will be my answer to all the hoo ha… still having trouble with it
staying on all night unless it’s plugged in to a wall it turns off after 2-3 hours ‘No Bueno’ then the file won’t open in the finder I have files I have not been able to look at with my computer cz I think it’s formatted to a mac etc… technical difficulties abound presently. So I get to keep my videos a bit longer …. I have posted some to youtube and I have a nice face shot i took in IRVINE ca during the day of one on my facebook albums… thinking of making that my profile pic today!

      • JP says:

I’m a professional camera op and there’s no need to use a cam light in direct sunlight, that’s why they have the subject and reporter with their backs to the sun.

Also, I still don’t see glasses on the guy…hahaha…

  9. Scott Miles says:

I found this article to be spot-on in regards to the author’s observations of BF eyeshine. I and others in my research group have seen it here in Colorado on absolutely black nights with no moon or other peripheral light sources. It is positively not reflected light. Just isn’t.
Some of the eyeshine observed is as bright as car headlights, and it does change colors. I have been able to use binoculars to observe the light sources in the forest, and have clearly seen 2 eyes projecting light. No question at all.
We have watched groups move across terrain, clearly seeing the eyes bob up and down as they walk along. Also watched them peek out from behind trees and rocks and then hide again.
I have no explanation for this, and have never heard an adequate one to date. Never the less, it is real and can be observed.
Our research area is in an extremely remote area of Central Colorado and we have mapped the terrain out in detail. No possibility of mistaking the lights of houses, cars or any other man-made source.
One other thing to add to the weirdness of it. They can turn it on and off at will. We have watched individuals’ eyes no more than 100 feet away simply blink off. Also have seen a group of 5 or more blink off at the same time.

No interest on my part in fending off criticism. Just supporting the author and her (I think the author is a female) observations.

Like she said, if you are truly interested, hit the woods and spend some time out there!

    • treepeekers says:

thank you Sasquatchinvestigations for shareing your findings here!! Appreciated the “hit the woods and spend some time out there!” No offence taken. Thank You!

    • Crossbow says:

I had some thoughts about Squatch eyes; that perhaps, they have a third eyelid.
The nicitating membrane is vistigial in humans. All the other primates have gotten rid of them except one: The Calibar Angwantibo
Oddly, this primate is nocturnal, hunts slowly in the trees, and hangs in dense bush to sleep days.

Most of the reasons listed for a third eyelid are protection, and lubrication. I’m a health care worker that works graveyard and must sleep days. I use foamboard on my bedroom windows (I could use aluminum foil, but someone would think I’ve got a grow-op going HAHA).
I can’t stress how important shutting light out is to sleep. It must be so for a squatch too.

Clearly finding a cave, root bowl, or very dense tree cover would be helpful. So too, would be pulling a third eyelid down over sensative eyes.

I don’t like the explanation that a creature with eyes so sensitive to low light levels, that it can run through trees on a new moon, can also generate fairly substantial light internally. Very conflicted purposes.
I was wondering if a third eyelid, outside the eyeball itself might be the source of luminescence?

I think this idea gets weak when perhaps considering the intensity of reported (and video’d) eyeshine. If this mechanism is true, however, it would mean a few things for eyeshine:

      1) Opening and closing the eyelid would have the appearnce of ‘turning on and off” the eyeshine.

      2) The eyeshine, when seen, should be a relatively static occurence. Since the squatch is in effect blind with the lid down, it would mean the eyshine should be intermittent, to some degree, as they open the eyelid and walk.

Finally I was wondering why make such light? (apart from being totally cool, like the Squatchaholic himself!).
I can’t say about other colors, but here’s an argument for reddy-orange:

Decades ago commando teams would adopt hand signals to relay messages when near the enemy. Today they have night vision and motorola comm systems with ear pieces.
Squatch hunt deer in the dark, stalk them, herd them, and ambush them. One way of signaling other members silently would be eyeshine.
Deer are essentially color blind to orange/red (hence human hunters wearing blaze orange). The deer would see this color only as a shade of grey.

Cool thread and an interesting site.

I know this is an older blog, but am so glad to find it. I live in the smoky mountains of East TN and experience the glowing eyes on a regular basis. This blog is possibly the best answer I’ve seen so far. Many times they show up when we have campfires out back or just sitting in complete darkness on our front porch. Sometimes they visit when we’re out front taking the dogs out. You need know when they’ll show up. Yes, they absolutely do change color and your color descriptions are dead on. Just last night we had a blue-green and and two amber ones show. Most of the time they seem to only show one eye though. They most certainly can control it at will and the eyes are emitting this light not reflecting it. One experience I base this on is seeing one bigfoot look left and right and being able to still see the light being emitted. Love the blog and hope to read more!
